When a system is operating under high pressure, there is a greater performance demand on the O Ring. When a subjected to a pressure, the O ring rubber tends to flow into the clearance gaps between the adjacent parts of the machine. At a lower pressure, the extrusion effect does not hamper the performance, however at a high pressure, this can damage the O rings.
Thus, in order to avoid permanent damage to the O rings at high pressure, special precautions such using an appropriate Back Up Rings need to be taken. Refer figure above.
