Overview

Working presently in the capacity of Chief Consultant Neurosurgeon, Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad, I, Dr. Somesh Desai, am trained and worked in best of the centres for neurosurgery in India and abroad. I have experience of successfully performing more than 1000 surgeries independently with main focus on Brain tumours, cerebrovascular surgery,  and epilepsy and radiosurgery( surgery without knife), head trauma surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, spinal tumors surgery, skull base surgery. I have done MBBS from Medical College, Vadodara (1991-97), Gujarat (India), which is one of the Best Medical Colleges in State of Gujarat. Established over 50 years back, it has Postgraduate Teaching Programmes in all specialties.

 

After completing my MBBS, I did my MS - General Surgery (1997-2000), from Medical College, Sir Sayajirao General Hospital, Vadodara, Gujarat. I also completed one year Compulsory Internship in the same institution. The 3 year course featured good clinical and academic programmes. During this tenure, I worked for 3 months in plastic surgery, cardio thoracic and urology departments. 

 

To further augment my medical career and understand the finer aspects of neuroscience, I completed M.Ch. in Neurosurgery (2001-2004), from Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (Institute of National Importance & Deemed University), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Bearing the name of benevolent monarch of the erstwhile State of Travancore, this institute is of National Importance as a tertiary care referral center and functions under the Science and Technology Ministry Government of India. This institute is also considered as apex institutions for neurosurgical care in the country and is well known in many areas of neurosurgical intervention including cerebrovascular Diseases, Brain tumours, Disease of The Spine, Stereotactic Surgery, Head Trauma Surgery, Peripheral Nerve Surgery, Spinal Tumors Surgery, Skull Base Surgery, Epilepsy Surgery and Movement Disorder Surgery.   

 

Further, I also gained valuable experience in the neurology field while working for 3 months at National institute for mental health and neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore. Based on the on job experiences gathered, I also successfully completed project work on the topic “Role of stereotactic biopsy in intracranial mass lesion,” that has helped my medical counterparts to have a better understanding on the topic.

 

After finishing my neurosurgical training I worked as a Assistant Professor in Department of Neurosurgery in Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences for 3 years, where I augmented my surgical skills ,apart from training neurosurgcal trainees. To further sharpen the skills and to get acquainted with the recent technological advances went for clincial fellowship to Melbourne, Australia. I did fellowship under world renowned Prof. Andrew Kaye, who is known for his elaborative work on brain tumours.
