An Anglicized form of brāhmaṇa, a masculine word referring to a member of the first varṇa, the priestly class. Through their ownership of the <iVeda</i and through their monopoly on its associated sacrificial ritual, brahmins as a class exercised ideological dominance over Vedic society. (In the <iPuruṣasūkta</i, the brahmin is represented as the mouth of the cosmic Man.) Brahmanism thereafter remained a major influence on the development of Indian religious and social history. Exclusive access to Vedic education (i.e. to the mantras of the orally transmitted <iVeda</i), and, through its manifestation in the sacrifice (yajña), to brahman (neut.), the power which underlies all things, enabled the brahmins to become the self-appointed guardians of dharma. They saw it as their ritual responsibility to repair, re-order, and maintain the principle or ‘law' (dharma) that ensures the universe and society operate in a harmonious and hierarchically ordered way. This is one of the reasons <iManusmṛti</i, part of the <iDharmaśāstra</i literature the brahmins formulated, could refer to the brahmin as ‘the lord of this entire creation, and assert that, because of his control of the sacrifice, even the gods were dependent upon him. Brahmins thus claimed to be ‘human gods' with special privileges and superior status, and the only worthy recipients of gifts (dāna).
