Oxitan contains oxaliplatin which is a cytotoxic drug generally classified as alkylating agent.

Indication

  • Oxitan is used in the treatment of metastatic colon or rectal cancer.
  • oxitan is also may be used for the treatment of late stage ovarian cancer.

Mechanism of action
Oxitan interferes with the dna and rna by damaging it leading to kill the growth of the tumour cells.

Oxitan is available as 50mg and 100mg single dose vial

OverdoseSymptoms of overdose associated with oxitan may include thrombocytopenia, hypersensitivity reaction, myelosuppression, nausea, vomiting, persistent sore throat or fever, fatigue, chest pain, wheezing, numbness or tingling in arms, hands, legs, or feet, diarrhea and neurotoxicity.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Do not take oxitan if you have myelosuppression, or if you have extremely low white blood cell counts (eg, extremely low neutrophil counts).
  • Oxitan is not given to patients who have severe peripheral neuropathy or patients with severely impaired renal function.
  • Do not take oxitan without consulting your doctor if you are pregnant.
  • Do not take oxitan if you are allergic to it or to any platinum compound, allergic symptoms are rash, hives, swelling of the lips and tongue, and difficulty breathing.
Side effects

The side effects associated with oxitan are hair loss (alopecia), infections due to low white blood cell count (neutropenia), low red blood cell count (anemia), numbness, tingling, or burning of hands and feet (sensory neuropathy), fatigue and weakness (asthenia), mouth or lip sores (mucositis), loss of appetite, difficulty in swallowing, shortness of breath, jaw spasm, constipation, fever, headache, cough, low blood pressure (hypotension), diarrhea, joint and muscle pain, etc. note:oxitan is a prescription drug and should be used under proper medical guidance and advice.
