Fire Retardant fabric are fabrics which will not burn. They are used for furnishings and dress materials, tent making etc.

They are two varieties:

a. Those which are not durable. These are chemically treated fabrics which loose the characteristics after many washes. They are used for furnishings,  curtains, upholstery, and tents which are not  frequently washed with water. They are made of silk, polyester, blend and cotton. They are available in various weights and colours and can be dry cleaned.

b. Fire retardant uniform fabrics made of inherent fire retardant fibres give permanent effect. These fabrics are made by blending the non inflammable yarn with cotton. They are used in applications like dress material, uniforms, overalls etc which are washed frequently. They are a recent invention and are used in uniforms of oil refineries, mining and other similar industry. The FR properties remain even after many years.
