Water contains hardness forming minerals viz. Calcium and Magnesium in dissolved form. In the presence of alkalinity which is available in water, these tend to form their corresponding insoluble carbonates which leads to scaling. Softening of water by use of Ion Exchange Process is well known. This process helps to overcome the scaling tendency of water. Treated soft water will have a total hardness of < 5 ppm as CaCO3 or commercial zero hardness which is well accepted for various end uses.

Softner unit contains ion exchange resins in Sodium (Na+) form. When the influent water containing calcium and magnesium (hardness forming minerals) comes in contact with the resins in Sodium form, Sodium (non scale forming) is released in water in exchange of Calcium and Magnesium. Ion Exchange reaction is a reversible one. On a predetermined time or output, (when all the Na+ in resin is exhausted) the unit is regenerated with NaCl (salt).
