The principle of the Air Cushion Valve is to allow large quantities of air in the pipeline during column separation occurring after pump tripping. It helps to avoid vacuum creation & thereby damage of the pipeline. After column separation, when column start returning, the air entrapped inside is compressed, which provides cushioning effect, and expelled under controlled pressure so as to dissipate the energy of the returning water column.
